For today’s review we are driving the Skoda Superb Wagon, the flagship of the Czech house. This is the first time that we are driving a Skoda for a road test.
The history of the Skoda’s flagship has its roots in 2009 when the first family version of the Superb was presented. More than 200,000 units were delivered, a very warm welcome for a car that today we find in a completely new guise. A garment that does not change its substance but revolutionizes its appearance. In fact, we find all the distinctive signs of a new stylistic language that Skoda has brought to all models in the range in recent years.
At first glance, the Skoda Superb Wagon looks like a spacious station wagon, but is able to hide its long shape thanks to refined lines and balanced proportions that give it an elegant and modern design. The metallic Quartz Gray color of the car under test, combined with the 18-inch Antares wheels, are in my opinion the perfect match for this Skoda Superb Wagon.
A car like this is made for long journeys, so I immediately put myself in the driver’s seat.
I open the driver’s door and immediately find the first pleasant discovery: an umbrella inside a compartment in the door. A detail that pleasantly surprised me and that led me to think about the Skoda’s motto: Simply Clever. An umbrella in itself is banal, almost taken for granted, so much so that many times we tend to forget it, lose it or not know where to put it. By exploiting the space that is unused in many other cars, Skoda has found a solution. Also, when I opened the door, I didn’t have to use the key. The car, in the Style set-up, is in fact equipped with the keyless system called KESSY.
The cockpit immediately gives me a great impression, it’s well done, lots tech equipment inside, spacious, bright and well finished. I also find a lot of space for rear passengers who can enjoy a real living room. All this is due the adoption of the Volkswagen group’s MQB platform that gives plenty of space. The trunk is immense, 660 liters that reach 1950 with the rear seats folded down. The access is very comfortable thanks to a large electrically operated tailgate and a sufficiently low load threshold. We also find a courtesy light in the trunk that can be used as a torch if necessary.
The infotainment system is composed of a very responsive 8-inch central screen and also equipped with Android Auto and CarPlay. Also available as standard in the Style version is the 10.2-inch virtual cockpit that offers many customization and display options, including one that reduces distractions, leaving only a speed indicator and an autonomy indicator.
I want to drive it! I start the 150 horsepower 2.0 TDI, move the 7-speed DSG lever to drive and immediately hit the road. Exceptional comfort, the engine is inaudible and the cohesion with the DSG gearbox is perfect. We had the pleasure to test this gearbox on many different types of cars from VW Group and never never disappointed us, capable of adapting to any condition. On this Superb, it offers smooth and almost unnoticeable gear changes. The test car is also equipped with a driving mode selector (DCC) which modifies the vehicle’s behavior, without however significantly altering the comfort qualities of the Skoda Superb Wagon. The adjustment of the DCC through adaptive suspension completes the picture.
I personally believe that the engine that equips the car under test is the best balance for the Skoda Superb Wagon. The performances are largely sufficient and the consumptions are reduced. On the motorway, without exceeding the limits, you reach 20 kilometers with a liter of diesel which can easily be increased to 22 kilometers per liter by reducing the speed to 110 km/h. Thanks to the 66-liter tank you get really interesting ranges that can easily reach 1200km with a full tank. Those few times that you go to the gas station you can appreciate another little gem: an ice scraper housed in the tank door.
Superb’s natural habitat is the motorway and thanks to the use of Adaptive Cruise Control, offered as standard on the Style trim level, traveling becomes truly enjoyable. The driver assistance systems are perfectly calibrated, never too abrupt or invasive. Driving stability is also remarkable, fatigue will be a distant memory.
However, the highway ends and this station wagon manages to be pleasant even when cornering. By setting the driving selector to sport, it stiffens the suspensions and the gearbox keeps the engine a little more revving, making the behavior more dynamic.
After sunset Skoda Superb Wagon still manages to amaze us with a very effective lighting system. The test model is equipped with a € 1,800 LED Pack that offers LED matrix headlights with automatic adjustment and full LED rear lights with dynamic direction indicators. For € 400 it is also possible to equip the car with an Interior Led Pack which includes customizable ambient lighting with ten different colors, safety lights in the front doors and led courtesy lights.
Skoda Superb Wagon with the 2.0 TDI in the Style set-up starts at around 42,000 euros, touching the 45,500 of the test model equipped with some accessories. I believe this price is balanced to the contents offered. To sum it all up: did we like it? Yes, without ifs and buts. A concrete car, capable of offering a lot of comfort and space with modest consumption.
