For today’s review we are driving a Porsche 911 (992) Turbo Cabriolet. This car can be used on a daily basis and it is capable of giving unique sensations. It is not the first Porsche 911 Turbo we test, you can find the previous article on 911 Turbo here.
We would like to thank Centro Porsche Firenze for giving us the opportunity to bring such an exclusive car to our pages. Thanks to the new “Porsche Drive” short-term rental service, it is now possible to enjoy the driving experience of a real Porsche, starting from just 24 hours up to several weeks. The rental includes a complete service package, which includes comprehensive insurance and extensive mileage, to fully enjoy the pleasure of driving a Porsche with peace of mind. The range of models varies from the iconic 911 to the most futuristic Taycan, passing through Macan and Cayenne, for a unique and personalized driving experience.
Our morning aboard the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet begins with winter weather, drizzle and the road surface is a bit damp. In any case, it is impossible to go unnoticed, the enlarged wheel arches typical of the Turbo versions, muscular and taut lines, different-sized rims with single-rings containing huge brake discs and a paintwork that almost looks like a tailored suit in terms of how well it fits.
On board, the first thing you notice, obviously after the body-coloured belts, is the quality of the interiors and their comfort. The finishes, as expected, are of excellent quality: leather, Alcantara and soft materials that are pleasant to the touch everywhere. Almost impossible to find fault. On the 992 we also find a more modern digital instrumentation which, recalling the past, emulates the 5 iconic dials of the 911 while offering information and services typical of a modern and technological car.
In Normal mode the car is docile, the engine is elastic and you always travel with a trickle of gas. Despite being a supercar, the suspension, set to soft, absorbs bumps well. The 8-speed PDK gearbox is very intuitive, almost as if there were a direct connection between the car and the driver’s brain. Despite having 580 horsepower, this Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet manages to put anyone at ease. In fact, it seems to have been driving it for a lifetime and this is precisely the beauty of the Porsche 911. Thanks to microphones and other sensors present on the body and wheel arches of the new 992, the car detects the rain and suggests us to set the Wet mode.
After warming up the flat six a bit, we set the manettino to Sport and the car transforms: the exhausts emit a powerful roar, the suspension stiffens, and the accelerator pedal responds instantly to our requests. Thanks to the 750nm of torque, every thrust on the accelerator gives us strong emotions, while every release is a symphony of crackling and gurgling. The steel braking system proves to be relentless, precise and incredibly powerful. The PDK change is spectacular, which becomes precise and quick.
In “Sport Plus” mode, the engine sound becomes more refined, less aggressive, the front and rear aerodynamic appendages extend to further increase the aerodynamic load. The gas pedal also becomes even more responsive. This mode is in fact concentrated on pure performance , indicated for use on the track.
The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is obviously also equipped with Launch Control: sport mode, left foot on the brake and full gas down. When released, in just 2.8 seconds, 100kmh is reached with unheard-of brutality and violence. In about ten seconds then you reach 200kmh.
Curve after curve we are more and more enraptured by the qualities of this 992, and almost without realizing it we arrive at the Medici Villa “La Ferdinanda”. Historic residence dating back to 1596 commissioned by the Medici family and designed by Buontalenti. A real paradise located in the heart of Tuscany. Just 20 km from Florence, this ancient estate of Medici origins is a true jewel of the Unesco heritage, nestled among the rolling hills of the Carmignano area. The sky opens, and finally allows us to open the top and enjoy everything this magnificent car has to offer.
Consumption: contrary to all expectations, and always considering the type of car we are talking about, they are quite low. In fact, it is possible to cover, going calmly, even 12km with a liter of fuel. A value which, of course, if you decide to squeeze the monster under the rear bonnet a little, will inexorably drop below 4km per litre.
The range of the new 992s starts at €118,000 with the Carrera, up to €219,000 for the 992 Turbo Cabriolet, which with a few accessories exceeds €250,000. Prices certainly not for everyone, but perfectly in line given the type of car, the performance and the qualities on the road.
Summing up, we were literally enraptured by its power, its killer performance and its iconic design, without forgetting the attention to detail and the quality of the materials.
It’s hard to find fault with such an amazing machine, if not impossible. Not only is it fun to drive, but it is also equipped with cutting-edge technologies, capable of offering an uncompromising driving experience. Finally, the convertible version amplifies all these sensations. In short, the perfect car does not exist, but the 992 Turbo Cabriolet is undoubtedly one of the few that comes close to it.
